Everything you need to know about the paperwork for donating your car in PA.
To donate your vehicle in Pennsylvania, you must transfer the title correctly. Sign the title in the designated area and ensure a copy is made for your records. Pennsylvania does not require notarization for title transfers. If you have a lien, contact your lien holder for permission to transfer ownership. If you’ve lost your title, visit the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) to request a duplicate before donation.
Once you’ve signed the title, notify PennDOT of the transfer. This can often be done online or via a quick visit to your local PennDOT office. Capital Rides Initiative will guide you through these steps to ensure a smooth process in supporting local benefits research through your vehicle donation.
1
Sign Title
Locate the signature section on the vehicle title, ensuring that all necessary parties have signed to authorize the donation.
2
Remove Plates
If required, remove the vehicle's license plates before the pickup. In Pennsylvania, you can keep them for use on another vehicle.
3
Cancel Insurance
Notify your insurance provider to cancel your policy on the donated vehicle, ensuring you avoid unnecessary charges.
4
Notify DMV
Inform the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) about the transfer of ownership to maintain accurate vehicle records.
